Ellen Maher has been training in the Special Olympics gymnastics program at the Y Bankstown since she arrived as a five-year-old with a fear of heights

Her bravery and years of dedication have paid off, earning her four medals, three gold and one bronze, at the 2024 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi.

 

Beginnings

Ellen has been training at the Y Bankstown since she was five and currently still trains there in their Special Olympics gymnastics program. Ellen was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in recognition of her achievements in the sport of gymnastics

Achievements

Ellen has represented Australia in the Special Olympics State Championships in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. She has won overall 15 gold medals, 19 silver medals and 10 bronze medals in Floor, Vault, Beam and Bars. In 2016 she competed in level 1 and achieved gold all-around medal, as well as in the 2022 Special Olympics State Trial. In 2024 Ellen competed in the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi where she won gold in floor, gold in vault, silver in beam and fourth in bars.
