Mayor's Message

Dear community,

Earlier this week, our community came together for the annual Say NO to Domestic and Family Violence Tug O’ War Cup.

It was an incredible day. Schools, local businesses, community groups and Council staff all joined forces. We pulled together, on the rope and in our hearts, to take a stand against domestic violence.

Domestic and family violence is one of the most serious issues in our society.

Everyone, particularly women and children have the right to live safely.

It is everyone’s responsibility to make that happen. Turning a blind eye is never the answer. Silence allows abuse to continue.

This message is even more important now as we mark the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (25 November-10 December). One in three women experiences violence, simply for being a woman.

This global campaign calls for an end to violence against women and girls.

This year’s focus is on making technology a force for equality. Online abuse and digital violence are real. They destroy lives. We must work together to stop them.

I am proud to live in a City that speaks out. A City that says NO to domestic violence. A City that supports healthy, respectful relationships.

Let’s keep taking a stand. Volunteer. Support local initiatives. Speak out. There is no excuse for domestic violence.

Together, we can create a safer Canterbury-Bankstown for all.

Regards,

Mayor Bilal El-Hayek
