Local Government NSW (LGNSW) has launched a major campaign, Save Our Recycling, which calls for a state-wide approach to recycling that will allow our state to collect, process and reuse recyclable material here in NSW.

More than $300 million in landfill levies are paid by local councils to the NSW State Government annually and only 18 per cent of that is returned to councils to spend on implementing waste and recycling programs for communities.

What’s the issue with our recycling?

Until recently, NSW’s recycling system relied heavily on the export of recycling (by companies) to countries that have invested in the facilities to reprocess it, such as China and Malaysia.  These countries are now winding back the amount of recycling they will accept from Australia which means we urgently need to come up with a new solution for waste management more locally.

We know our community strongly supports recycling by using the household yellow bin every week but we are joining with the Local Government sector and strongly lobbying the NSW Government to invest heavily in the recycling industry to strengthen our position and ensure the future of recycling stays secure in NSW.

How can you help?

You can join the campaign and add your name to a growing list of supporters across NSW to demonstrate how important this is to communities.
