A Sefton teenager has taken out this year’s Canterbury-Bankstown Youth Week Creative Writing Competition, with a poem about struggling to connect with her grandparents’ native language.
Sixteen-year-old Donna Wilson said she was beyond appreciative of the recognition.
"It’s so cool the judges enjoyed reading my entry and thought it was worthy of the win. It’s a topic that’s really personal to me," Ms Wilson said.
"I’m so grateful for having attended Vietnamese school for eight years, but I don’t use the language at home as much as some of my friends and cousins, so I do feel a disconnect.
"I’m proud of the way I personified how I speak Vietnamese in the middle of my poem – I think that section flowed well when I used imagery to describe it."
Also receiving honourable mentions were:
Sweatshop Director and competition judge, Dr Michael Mohammed Ahmad, said this year’s finalists displayed an amazing amount of diversity.
"Our City was so accurately represented – from the issues discussed, to the cultures and religions represented, and even the entries’ genres," he said.
"This is the first year we’ve had an entry submitted in an Indigenous language – it’s also the first time we’ve had science fiction entries take out two of the top spots!"
Mayor, Khal Asfour, said the work of this year’s finalists and those from each year dating back to 2008, have been included in a book entitled
Bent not broken: 10 years of creative writing from Canterbury-Bankstown.
"Youth Week, and in particular our creative writing competition, is about providing a platform for freedom of expression for our local youth," Mayor Asfour said.
