Record $5.7 million invested into footpaths

A record $5.7million will be invested on footpath improvements by the City of Canterbury Bankstown in 2017-18.

Administrator, Richard Colley, said the funds will go towards constructing and repairing 52 footpaths across the City.

"This is the most amount of funding Council has ever invested into footpaths," he said.

"Infrastructure such as roads and footpaths are a continuing pressure point for councils but we are determined to keep improving in this area and are looking forward to delivering key identified projects.

"We are committed to constructing around 15.6 kilometres of new and renewed footpaths this financial year, to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to move around.

"That 15.6 kilometres will add to the existing 1,185km network of footpaths."

Each year, residents put forward their suggestions to Council as to where they think new footpaths should be constructed. These areas are then prioritised.

"We’ve heard the concerns of our residents, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, and are intent on constructing and renewing 52 footpaths," Mr Colley said.

The funding will come out of the Council’s 2017-18 $72.4 million Capital Works Program, except for the footpath construction at Cooks River Bridge (linking Tennent Parade and Lang Road, Hurlstone Park), which will come out of the NSW Government’s Active Transport Programme.

The first footpath project will be Pobje Avenue, Auburn, which will commence at the end of this month.

All works are expected to be completed by April next year. For more information, go to cb.city/projects
