Administrator, Richard Colley, issued the warning to parents and carers and said there is a zero-tolerance policy for those who drive dangerously.
“Our Parking Officers and Rangers handed out 1,202 fines last year to drivers whod disregarded the road rules in school zones, and irresponsibly put our community’s lives at risk,” Mr Colley said.
“That’s 1,202 fines too many and we make no apology for handing out fines to people who disregard the road rules.”
The largest number of fines issued last year in school zones was for disobeying no stopping signs, stopping at bus stops, and parking in a no parking zone.
To curb drivers from doing the wrong thing, Council has implemented education programs in local schools with assistance from Council’s Road Safety Officers, Police and Roads and Maritime Service (RMS).
One of these initiatives includes handing out flyers to parents and carers advising them of fines and demerit points they can incur if they disobey the law in school zones.
In addition, Council officers also undertake a safety audit around all schools to check that signage, zebra crossings, and flashing lights are RMS compliant.
“It’s important that we continue to work with RMS to maintain the highest standard possible when it comes to road safety around schools,” Mr Colley said.
“This year I urge drivers to be much more vigilant, especially in school zones. If you don’t want a fine, then simply do the right thing.”
Fines for parking offences committed in school zones range from $180 to $433.
