The City of Canterbury Bankstown has launched a new online rates calculator, to better show ratepayers how their rates are proposed to change in July 2021.
The NSW Government requires all merged councils to implement a new aligned rating system next financial year.
Mayor Khal Asfour said the new rates system Council’s proposing will address the current rates imbalance and bring about fairness and equity for all ratepayers.
“You may not be aware, but currently residential and business ratepayers pay different rates depending on where their property address is located in the City,” Mayor Asfour said.
“We launched community consultation for the proposed new rates system at the beginning of this month.
“We’ve been holding a number of information sessions – both in person and online, mailed information packs, set up a dedicated phone line to answer questions, and this calculator is just one more tool ratepayers now have at their disposal.”
The online calculator is easy to use - ratepayers simply input their land value and the calculator will show an estimation of what changes are proposed to occur each year.
Mayor Asfour said Council’s number one priority is to ensure every ratepayer gets value for their dollar and that their money is invested in the City.
“But as the City grows, those demands will be even greater, and Council will need to invest even more to deliver modern services and infrastructure,” Mayor Asfour said.
“To do this, Council is also seeking an extra $40 million per year, through a Special Rate Variation.
“This will mean more money for things like improving town centres, cleaning streets, parks and waterways, improving aquatics facilities and creating more recreational and family-friendly spaces.”
