Councillor Khal Asfour has been elected the inaugural Mayor of the City of Canterbury Bankstown, at an Extraordinary Meeting of Council.

“I would like to thank my fellow Councillors for the trust they have bestowed on me to lead them and the Council over the next two years,” Mayor Asfour said.

Mayor Asfour also congratulated Deputy Mayor Nadia Saleh on her appointment.

“This is an exciting new era for Canterbury-Bankstown and I am looking forward to working closely with Councillor Saleh and the other 13 Councillors.”

Councillor Asfour was opposed for the position of Mayor by Councillor Glen Waud, winning the vote 10 to 5, while Councillor Saleh edged out Councillor Philip Madirazza for Deputy Mayor 10 to 5.

“We have many challenges and opportunities ahead and I thank those who have put their faith in me to lead this Council,” Mayor Asfour said.

“We, as a collective, will be making important decisions that will impact the lives of our residents today and importantly into the future. We have a huge responsibility to those that voted for us and also the families that will move into our City in the future.”

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Saleh congratulated Mayor Asfour on his appointment.

“My promise is simple and straight forward, I will give our community every positive energy, to ensure this great City is one of collaboration, commitment, and contribution,” Councillor Saleh said.
