Lunar New Year

Things are about to get very hot at this year’s Lunar New Year festival, when the Circaholics Fire Twirling Company dazzle audiences with their daredevil fire stunts.

Company owner, Calvin Grant, said his fascination with fire began back in high school when his school took him to a circus festival.

“I was mesmerised. I couldn’t believe these performers were setting things on fire for entertainment,” he said.

In 2009, Circaholics Fire Twirling was founded, after years of experimenting and training.

“All of our performers, including myself, are self-taught. It’s all about trial and error. We always perfect the stunts first before adding fire,” Mr Grant said.

One of the tricks and thrills audiences can expect to see from Mr Grant and his performers this year includes the heart-stopping fire skipping rope number, and a new Star Wars showstopper.

“I’m very fond of the fire skipping rope. My shoes are even lit on fire for this routine, so it looks like my whole body is engulfed in flames,” he said.

“The one I’m most excited about though is the Star Wars sword fight we’ve mastered. It will look cool because we’re experimenting with different colours of fire, so we will have the red and blue fires going to mimic the light sabers in Star Wars.”

Circaholics Fire Twirling is one of the entertainment acts sure to delight audiences this Lunar New Year.

Other entertainment will include, Joe June Magic, martial arts, Chinese Wonderman, traditional song and dance by the Vietnamese Cultural School and Shanshan Dancing Studio. The night will be capped off with a bang with the traditional Lion Dance starting at 8.40pm.

The Lunar New Year Festival has something for everyone, so join in on the fun at Saigon Place, Chapel Road South, on Saturday 21 January, from 4pm.
