Pedestrians who are distracted by their mobile phone or listening to music with headphones, are being targeted as part of a new road safety campaign.

The Look Out Before You Step Out campaign is about educating pedestrians to take an extra moment to look before stepping out onto roads, as well as choosing safe times and places to cross.

Stencilled messages will be placed on pedestrian crossings reminding walkers and joggers alike there could be oncoming traffic.

Mayor Khal Asfour believes the campaign could save lives.

"Over the past six years, 11 pedestrians have died crossing our roads. That is 11 too many," he said.

According to Transport for NSW, more than 1,500 pedestrians are hit on NSW roads each year, with pedestrians accounting for one in seven road deaths.

Mayor Asfour said motorists also need to be reminded to slow down.

"Statistics show most of these incidents have occurred in 50km/h zones and in our local CBDs.

"In the end, these campaigns will help but, at the end of the day, it comes down to everyone – whether you’re driving a car or bike, or walking – to act responsibly."

The stencilled messages will be located at:

  • Evaline Street, Campsie;
  • Broughton Street and Canterbury Road, Canterbury;
  • Wilson Avenue, Belmore;
  • Ninth Avenue, Campsie;
  • Lady Cutler Avenue, Bankstown;
  • Bankstown City Plaza bus interchange; and
  • Cnr Jacobs and Rickard Roads, Bankstown.
