Teaching learner drivers doesn't need to be stressful

The City of Canterbury Bankstown is set to hold its biannual Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers workshop later this month, to help guide parents and guardians through the experience.

Mayor Khal Asfour said the Council has adopted a safe systems approach made up of four elements - safer people, safer roads, safer vehicles and safer speeds.
“Supervising drivers are an important factor in moulding safe learner drivers,” Mayor Asfour said.
“Often, parents and guardians end up teaching learner drivers and it’s very important any bad driving habits they may have picked up over time are not passed on.
“This workshop helps parents and guardians identify those bad habits, so they can make changes before they influence the learner driver.”
Learning to drive can also be a stressful time, for both the learner and the supervising driver, and this workshop provides parents and guardians with helpful tips.
“In the end, our goal is to ensure that young local drivers from Canterbury-Bankstown are not only confident on our roads but safe as well. We do not want them to become another statistic,” Mayor Asfour said.
“Young drivers, in their first few years of driving, are particularly vulnerable, especially because they are so new to being behind the wheel.
“Over the last few years, drivers aged 17-25 have represented almost a quarter of annual road fatalities in NSW.”
The FREE two-hour workshop, run by Council’s Road Safety Officers in partnership with the Roads and Maritime Services, will be held at Bankstown Civic Tower, 66-72 Rickard Road, Bankstown, on Wednesday 15 November (6.30-8pm). Topics covered in the workshop include:
  • What is involved in being a supervising driver;
  • Issues facing young drivers;
  • How the NSW graduated licensing scheme works;
  • The importance of learner driver experience;
  • Lesson planning and dealing with stress;
  • Tips for safe solo driving; and
  • Where to go for more information.
For more information, or to reserve your place (bookings essential), call Council’s Road Safety Officer on 9707 9424 or email jenny.murray@cbcity.nsw.gov.au
