City of Canterbury Bankstown is taking further steps to stop illegal dumping by expanding its camera surveillance of local dumping hotspots.

In the latest stage of the “Eyes on It” program, Council has installed five new high-tech CCTV cameras in a number of locations across the City in an effort to prevent illegal dumping and promote cleaner streets.

The surveillance cameras, which detect movement, were funded through a $77,000 investment from the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Illegal Dumping Prevention Grant program, and will operate around the clock to assist Council Officers in identifying offenders.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said the cameras were there to act as a deterrent and ensure our streets stay clean.

“We want to stamp out this illegal behaviour by a handful of people who have no respect for the wider community,” Mayor El-Hayek said.

“The message is simple: you are being watched and if anyone is considering illegally dumping materials, you will be caught.”

The expanded camera network follows Council’s concerted efforts to tackle illegal dumping and promote use of their booked bulky waste service, which has led to a 38 per cent reduction in illegal dumping and a 45 per cent increase in booked clean-ups across priority areas over the past eighteen months.

Dedicated Clean City Illegal Dumping Prevention Officers are targeting problem areas with education, engagement and enforcement to encourage residents to do the right thing and book in a bulky waste collection.

“Council has a zero tolerance for dumpers who just want to cut corners,” Mayor El-Hayek said.

“We’re out in force with more dedicated staff and surveillance cameras than ever before.”

Placing items on the kerbside without a Booked Clean-Up can attract a fine of up to $4,000 for individuals and $8,000 for businesses.

Council offers two free clean-ups a year to help residents dispose of unwanted bulky items. To book a clean-up, visit cb.city/CleanUp or if you live in a unit block with six or more units, contact your building representative.
