Canterbury-Bankstown's Library and Knowledge Centres are the perfect places to explore your family history. Whether you are just starting out on the journey or are an experienced family historian your library has a wealth of information, including: newspapers, letters, diaries and manuscripts, maps, passenger lists, electoral rolls and much more.

Commence your journey by attending our series of Family History workshops. Bookings are required. ​​

Where to Begin

Saturday 19 August 9.30am-12.30pm
An introduction to family history for anyone thinking about tracing their family tree. Begin with yourself and work back through the generations. Learn how to collect and organise information in an orderly manner. Become familiar with family group charts and log sheets and learn how to put together a research kit.
Cost $4 per session, bookings required

The Next Step

Saturday 16 September 9.30am-12.30pm
The second session looks at the most common resources available for family history research, including birth, death and marriage indexes (BDM's), cemetery transcriptions, probate indexes, shipping records and importantly where to find them.
Cost $4 per session, bookings required

Where to Now

Saturday 21 October 9.30am-12.30pm
The third session will introduce you to specialised records, such as Electoral rolls, Census records, Sands directory, Occupational records, maps, land title records, Government records and Military records and where to find them.
Cost: $4​ per session, bookings required

Overseas Records

Saturday 18 November 9.30am-12.30pm
In the fourth session you will discover the vast array of overseas records that can assist in your family history research and learn where you can find them.
Cost: $4 per session, bookings required

The Internet

Saturday 16 December 9.30am-12.30pm
When researching Family History the Internet is your friend. This session will introduce you to the various databases on the Internet that will unravel exciting leads for you to follow.
Cost: $4 per session, bookings required
