Street lighting is important for safety reasons, particularly in urban areas. However, some lighting can be a nuisance. Overly lit office buildings and advertising signs are two examples of excessive lighting, and repeated exposure can reduce quality of life in residential areas. It is also a waste of energy resources which results in the unnecessary consumption of fossil fuels and contribute to air pollution.
