The Sydenham to Bankstown Corridor is the focus of significant NSW Government-led renewal and change:
The Draft Sydenham to Bankstown Urban Renewal Corridor Strategy proposes more than 35,000 additional dwellings within walking distance of the proposed metro stations between Sydenham and Bankstown. The Strategy also includes infrastructure to support the proposed growth identified for each centre.
The Sydenham to Bankstown Metro Upgrade Project includes a 13.5km upgrade and conversion of the T3 Bankstown Line to metro standards. It will involve an upgrade to all 11 stations between Sydenham and Bankstown. Converting the T3 Bankstown Line will require temporary suspension of rail services.
Council's overall position is the Draft Strategy and Metro Environmental Impact Statement (Metro EIS) cannot be supported at this time.
The Draft Sydenham to Bankstown Urban Renewal Corridor Strategy is narrowly focussed on delivering housing, without considering the capacity of the existing and proposed infrastructure required to support it, such as new hospitals and schools. Critically, the Draft Strategy is inconsistent with the Greater Sydney Commission's Draft Greater Sydney Region Plan and Draft South District Plan.
The Metro proposal, as it currently stands, lacks the vision and commitment needed to provide economic, social and infrastructure opportunities for the people of Canterbury-Bankstown. While the provision of much needed infrastructure to service the growing needs of our community is welcomed, Council has significant concerns the project, as planned, will have detrimental outcomes for our community and key opportunities are not being realised.
