All business owners and owners of properties used for business purposes should feel safe at their place of business and surroundings.

We are committed to improve and maintain safety for our residents and business operators through our Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan's initiatives and programs, including providing business operators useful information to stay safe and comfortable during and after business hours.

Here are some useful tips to protect your business from break-ins.

Strengthen your property’s exterior

Put in and maintain bright exterior lighting, especially motion-activated sensor lights, around all entry points, parking lots and dark areas.
Ensure fences and gates are sturdy, well-maintained and fitted with heavy-duty locks or chains. Use bollards to stop ram-raid style entry for storefronts or warehouse doors.
Trim trees and shrubs near windows and doors to avoid potential hiding spots for intruders and improve camera visibility.
Clear away ladders, bins and garden tools around your property that could be used to access the roof or upper floors.
Display clear “No Trespassing” signs around the property.

Secure your entry and access points

Use solid wood or metal doors in steel frames. Upgrade standard locks to high-quality deadbolts and use multi-point locking systems.
Put in window locks, bars, security grilles or shatter-resistant window film.
Get into the habit of checking and locking all doors, windows, gates and internal doors, even if leaving for a short time.
Use key card, fob or biometric access systems to control who enters restricted areas and regularly audit access permissions.

Surveillance tech and monitoring

Use a robust, monitored alarm system.
Install CCTV at all entry/exit points and the building surroundings. Ensure cameras have night vision and are regularly tested.
Secure your electrical box and put critical security systems (CCTV, router, alarm panel) on an uninterrupted power supply to ensure they remain work if the power is cut.

Optimise your internal security

Store cash and high-value items in a safe and keep it hidden.
Train employees on security protocols, how to report suspicious activity and how to apply security measures consistently.
Use inventory tracking and asset management tools for high-value goods to quickly spot discrepancies.
