About the Local Area Plans

The objectives of the Local Area Plans are primarily:

  • To implement the Greater Sydney Region Plan, South District Plan and local strategies;
  • To set out the vision and spatial context for the distinctive localities that make up the City of Canterbury Bankstown;
  • To specify the best ways to accommodate residential and employment growth;
  • To outline the delivery of supporting infrastructure, facilities and open space; and
  • To inform changes to the statutory planning framework and infrastructure priorities.

As part of the plan making process, Council consults with the community, industry, state agencies and key stakeholders. Council also researches current policies, targets and best practice at the local, state and national levels, and may undertake supplementary studies to further identify issues and possible solutions.

The Local Area Plans recognise there are many other initiatives that may make a place more sustainable. Council will deliver numerous other actions such as service delivery, community support and advocacy through the Community Strategic Plan.

The process in each local area

  1. Background research and community direction
     This involves consultation with the community and other stakeholders, and the preparation of specialist studies for the subject area.

  2. Issues Paper
    Informed by the studies and consultation.  The Issues Paper also sets out the current situation, projected demand for new dwellings and jobs and its implications for future planning.

  3. Local Area Plan
    Sets out how to achieve the vision in the community plan and directions from the issues paper. The Local Area Plan will determine actions and planning reforms needed to ensure predicted levels of growth will be accommodated within more liveable and sustainable communities.

  4. Planning Proposal
    Implements the Local Area Plan, and sets out the changes to the statutory planning framework.

The Specialised Centre is an important strategic economic driver within the city. The centre contains the Bankstown Airport lands, the Milperra Industrial Precinct and the Condell Park Industrial precincts.

Given the unique activities and character within the Specialised Centre, a different approach will be required than that used for the other local areas within the city consistent with the Greater Sydney Commission’s South District Plan.
