Rock painting has taken hold across the world and is an activity which is bringing communities together through painting and hiding rocks for others to find. It's a great way for kids and parents to add a little bit of creativity and nature play to their day and an opportunity for families to explore their local parks and bushlands.

The painted rock craze started through the The Kindness Rocks Project and was created to spread inspiration and a moment of kindness for unsuspecting recipients through random inspirational rocks dropped along the way. It has become a grass roots kindness movement all over the world. If one person finds a rock with a message that speaks to them during a difficult time, your efforts have made a difference! One message or a bright and whimsical picture, at just the right moment, can change your entire day...outlook...life!

Rock painting, hiding and finding can be enjoyed in a group, with family or on your own. The idea is simple - Go hunting for painted rocks in your local park, or paint some and hide them for others to find and help spread some joy in your community.

Six Simple Steps

  1. Use unpolished clean dry rocks.
Find the rocks in nature or purchase them from your local hardware/landscaping store. Don't take rocks from private property, National Parks or from someone's landscaping. If in doubt - Don't take!
  2. Decorate your rocks.
Anyone can paint - any age or skill level. Acrylic paint or paint pens like Posca pens or permanent markers like Sharpies are easiest (and less messy!) Fun bright designs to bring a smile to someone's face, or a positive message are all great ideas. Keep it fun. Keep it positive. Keep it clean.
  3. Label your rocks
Write cb.city/rocks on the back of the rock, so people know what to do with their discovery.
  4. Seal your rocks
Use a clear acrylic spray to help seal your rock and protect it from rain and prevent fading.
  5. Hide your rocks
Hide your rocks in bushwalking tracks, local parks, playgrounds etc. Please don't place rocks inside schools, restaurants, businesses or other private properties and make sure you don't place the rocks where they could cause someone to trip, where they could hurt someone or where they could fall on someone.
  6. Tell your Friends
Share this page with anyone that you think might like to join in the fun. You can also join NSW Rocks on Facebook for more information on how families can share their discoveries.

It is the responsibility of parents to monitor their children whilst rock hiding/finding.
