Mable's Story

Photo of Mable

It's 2028 but, back in 2018, I was considering moving out of Sydney. I chose to stay in Canterbury–Bankstown where I had lived for many years. What made me stay?

All the services I need are close by. I am slower on my feet these days but the ramps and paths all make it easy to get around. I gave up the car years ago but there is a lift at the station for a quick trip anywhere using my pensioner card.

I can walk to the multi–purpose centre which has the library, meeting rooms and space to get involved in gentle exercise class, mahjong club and water colour lessons.

It's a short stroll to the local park where I walk my dog – 'Marmaduke' – every day. And there are plenty of local festivals and events, which means there is always something new to see or do.

I like the activity everywhere – the area feels safe. I don't go out much at night but I am not afraid to.

I can keep up my Meals on Wheels volunteering once a month and the community centre bus picks me up every Wednesday for an outing. My local church is around the corner and I bring flowers in every week from my little courtyard garden.

I know I can call on my neighbours for help if I need to – my friends are close by and I am very busy living life!
