Rebecca's Story

It's 2028. I am 25 years old and I feel strongly that we should keep striving to save the planet.

My little brother, Dodzi, and I will be living a lot longer than past generations and I want to do everything I can to keep the environment clean and green.

Every March, I help with the Keep Australia Beautiful Clean up and last month I joined a Council Bush care Group working near the solar farm.

I have worked in a local café since I was 14 and have saved enough money for my first electric car. It's great that I can charge it at so many places around the City.

I still use my bike for short trips though, it keeps me healthy, it's cheaper and there are so many bicycle corridors around now – it's sometimes even quicker.

I take my brother down to the Wiley Park ponds a lot. He likes all the birds and plants. We can hear the frogs but can never find them, though we often see pretty birds, turtles and lizards.

Our villa complex, in East Hills, uses solar energy and has a water tank. It's great to see most of my neighbours have these things as well.

The Council keeps the streets really clean and I know we recycle a lot more than we ever did before. Everyone is very aware they should not litter or dump rubbish.

My family likes to go down to the Georges River whenever we can for picnics. I know the water is clean and the river is really healthy. It's a great place to kayak.

We must all do our part to protect our world.

It's up to everyone to do their bit for future generations – government, businesses and me.

People said they want CBCity 2028 to be:

Safe, green, clean, growing local food, environmentally friendly, with healthy waterways and protecting our natural environment.

How we will get there

Council and Government will work together to:

  • Encourage and support initiatives that save our natural resources
  • Protect and enhance bushland biodiversity
  • Increase the tree canopy
  • Keep the streets clean
  • Prosecute polluters and illegal dumpers
  • Collect and manage waste and recyclables
  • Provide education and promote volunteering
  • Create local habitats and corridors - manage weeds and feral animals
  • Regulate noise
  • Improve the ecological condition of our waterways
  • Be leaders in catchment management
  • Plan for and manage the floodplain, our catchments and stormwater

What you can do:

  • Buy green, grow food, and plant natives
  • Invest in a water tank and go solar
  • Join a bush care group
  • Recycle right, compost and avoid excess packaging
  • Walk, cycle or use public transport
  • Feed birds with native plants – not bread or unwanted food
  • Use bins or take your rubbish with you
  • Report people polluting, dumping or littering
